Stages of Kidney Disease

How kidney disease stages help providers explain kidney function changes, monitor progression, and plan treatment.

How staging works

Kidney disease is commonly grouped into stages using information such as estimated filtration rate and other clinical findings. The stage helps place kidney function in context, but it is only one part of the overall picture.

Earlier stages may call for careful monitoring and prevention. Later stages often require more discussion around long-term planning, complications, and advanced treatment decisions.

What changes by stage

  • How often lab work is checked
  • How aggressively blood pressure and diabetes are managed
  • Whether medications need review or adjustment
  • Whether future dialysis or transplant planning needs to start

Understanding the stage can make it easier to follow why your care team recommends certain tests, visits, and treatment steps.
