Testing & Treatments

A practical overview of common tests and treatment discussions used in nephrology care.

Common testing

Kidney care often relies on a combination of blood work, urine testing, blood pressure monitoring, and imaging when needed. These help providers understand how the kidneys are functioning and whether there are signs of inflammation, obstruction, protein loss, or electrolyte imbalance.

  • Blood tests such as creatinine and electrolyte panels
  • Urine testing for protein, blood, and concentration changes
  • Imaging such as ultrasound when structural detail is needed
  • Trend review over time rather than one isolated result

Treatment planning

Treatment depends on the reason for kidney injury or chronic decline. Plans may include medication changes, blood pressure control, diabetes management, fluid guidance, nutritional support, and repeat testing. In some cases, the conversation may also include dialysis education or advanced planning.
